Congregations Shaarey Tefiloh and Beth Mordecai Cemetery, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ
The cemeteries for Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh (Shari Tephalo) and Congregation Beth Mordecai lie on a property along quiet Florida Grove
Road in Perth Amboy. I was told by a representative of the
Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries that the property once held cemeteries for 4 synagogues but 2 of them turned their
properties over to the other two. There is no clear demarcation of each cemetery so we have chosen to combine the work into
a single transcription. I am told the landscapers and some others know where the boundary lies but I was unable to figure it out.
The President of the
Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries
told me she is part of a group which is preparing a book about the history of the Perth Amboy Jewish Community including the cemeteries. We
wish them luck with this project and will list information about how you can purchase a copy when it is published.
This cemetery is medium sized, holding something like 1,000 - 2,000 burials. The property appears inaccessible at first due to
the fencing and gates which house and protect it, however, at least one of the gates is unlocked and access can easily be gained. The cemetery
contains some beautiful and unique monuments and should not be missed by those having roots in the area. We hope you find this work useful and,
as always, please let us know if you have any problems or questions.
