History of the 40th Ohio Volunteer InfantryThe following is extracted from the publication "History of the Fortieth Volunteer Infantry" by John N. Beach, Late Sergeant of the Regiment, published 1864. The 40th was organized in various location throughout Ohio and mustered into service at various times during late 1861, The 40th saw action in neutral Kentucky shortly after muster, continued into Tennessee, then proceeded into Pennsylvania, and participated in the Atlanta campaign. Of its roster, the regiment suffered 259 dead and almost 300 wounded, captured or discharged due to disability. We have reproduced almost the complete publication here for your free use.
