Walter M. Wilhelm
Influenza Victim
General Manager of Eddystone Munitions Co. Dies After Week's Illness
Captain Walter M. Wilhelm, vice president and general manager of the Eddystone Munitions Company, was added yesterday to the city's toll of influenza victims. He died in his apartments at 1431 Walnut street, after an illness of less than a week. He and his family were preparing to move into their new home in Merion when he was taken ill.
Last Friday he was put to bed suffering from a severe attack of the disease. Pneumonia soon developed and in spite of his physician's effort it was soon seen that his case was hopeless. With him when he died were his wife, former Miss Edith N. Hoyle, and his two small sons, Walter and Daniel.
Captain Wilhelm was born in Defiance, O., in 1884, and his mother is still living there. His body will be taken to his old home for burial. No arrangements for funeral services in this city have yet been made.
The ascent of the ladder of business success was rapid for Captain Wilhelm in the last few years. After nine years in the regular army he resigned his post as head of the artillery ammunition department of the Frankford Arsenal in July 1915 to become vice president and general manager of the newly formed munition (sic) company. He said at the time he believed he could be of more value to his country in his new position than as an officer in the army.
His acceptance of the post was a loss to the arsenal, declared Colonel Montgomery, who was then the commander there, but the colonel pointed to it as a tribute to the efficiency with which the youthful officers of the regular army were trained.
Robert E. Morrow Dead
Robert E. Morrow, 242 ½ North Franklin street, a notable figure in the theatrical world died last night of influenza.
Mr. Morrow had connected with the theatrical business in the city for the last twenty years. His .. was at the Blaney's Theatre. Arch street, as treasurer of the Gaiety. For the last four years he had been manager and co-owner of the Trocadero Theatre. He will be buried from the family homed, 2712 South Seventeenth street.
Logan's Pioneer Doctor Martyr To Profession
A martyr to his profession, Dr. William B. Schick, fifty years old, of York road and Rockland streets, died yesterday, after six days of illness from influenza, contracted while attending patients.
As the pioneer physician of Logan, where he established himself a dozen years ago, Doctor Schick had a large practice, in addition to his duties as surgeon of the Jewish Hospital. Since the epidemic began he had attended many influenza cases. Last Friday he diagnosed the symptoms himself.
Blue Jackets Fire Volley At Naval Grave
At the military funeral yesterday of Miss. Marie L. Hidell, a nurse at the United States Naval Hospital, Twenty-fifth street and Grays Ferry road, who died from Spanish Influenza after nursing sailors ill with the disease, bluejackets fired a salute over her grace in Woodside Cemetery after Chaplain Bennett, of the Naval Home, had given the eulogy.
Miss Hidell had been stationed at the Naval Hospital since the war began. She formerly was at the Santa Isabel Hospital, at Matanzas, Cuba, and later superintendent of nurses at St. Thomas Hospital, Panama, where she fought fevers and pestilence.
Services were held at the home of her brother, H. R. Hidell, 5505 Greenway avenue. Captain Pickrell, chief medical officer at the hospital and other officers from the Naval Home were present.
