Mrs. Alden Lee, Daughter of Geo. H. Earle, Pneumonia Victim
Many Prominent Philadelphia Folk Stricken With Malady
Mrs. Alden Lee, wife of Ensign Lee, U. S. N., and daughter of Mr. And Mrs. George H. Earle, Jr., died yesterday of pneumonia following influenza. Some time ago Mrs. Lee went to the home of her sister, Mrs. Lawrence Dilworth Beggs, of Haverford, where she gave birth to a daughter last Thursday. Shortly after influenza developed. Ensign Lee arrived home Saturday and his wife of one year died the day after his arrival.
Mrs. Beggs, who was reported Sunday as being critically ill with influenza last night was said to be about the same, but that her pulse was strong. Two days ago Mr. Beggs was taken ill, but his condition is said to be favorable.
Mrs. Gilbert Mather, Mrs. Victor Charles Mather, and Mrs. Joseph M. Patterson, 2d, are sisters and Ensign George H. Earle, 3d, who married Miss Huberta Potter, and Lieutenant Ralph Earle, who married Miss Mary Elizabeth Clayton, are brothers.
Ensign Lee is a son of Mrs. Edward Clinton Lee, of Haverford, and in a brother of Mrs. Sigourney Mellor, Lothrop Lee, Ruckman Lee and Philip Lee.
Brother-in-Law of Mrs. Lee Injured in France.
Coincident with the announcement of the death of Mrs. Lee it became known that Captain Victor C. Mather, her brother-in-law, was injured recently in an accident to his automobile in France.
Captain Mather and Captain R. Penn Smith, Jr., of Strafford, were together in the accident, but Captain Smith escaped injury, according to a cablegram received by his father two days ago. The exact nature of Captain Mather's injuries could not be learned, but friends said they were serious.
Rev. William Carter, of St. Vincent's Seminary, Another Victim
The Rev. William Carter, C. M., professor of theology and philosophy at St. Vincent's Seminary, Germantown, died of influenza yesterday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Carter, whose home was in Buffalo, was twenty-six years old. Two years ago he went to Rome and was given the degree of D. D., T. H. D. He has two brothers in the priesthood. He will be buried tomorrow in the vault at the seminary.
Carl C. Glanz
Lieutenant Carl C. Glanz, Melrose Park, died Thursday at Carlstrom Field, Arcadia, Fla., from pleuro-pneumonia.
Lieutenant Glanz had been ill for six days. He was twenty-three years old and was the son of Mr. And Mrs. Charles Glanz. He was born in Philadelphia July 1, 1895. He graduated from the Cheltenham High School in 1914. At the time of his enlistment, Lieutenant Glanz was a senior in the electrical engineering department at the University of Pennsylvania. While at the University he was a member of the varsity crew, the Sphinx Society, the Kappa Sigma and Sigma Tau Engineering Fraternity and the Undine Barge Club.
