Major B. F. Pepper A Martyr To War
Son of Late University Provost Dies of Wounds in France.
Major Benjamin Franklin Pepper, cousin of George Wharton Pepper and a junior member of the firm of Henry, Pepper, Bodine & Pepper, died of wounds received in fighting in France September 26, according to a dispatch from the War Department received yesterday. Major Pepper led his Second Battalion of the 313th Infantry of the Seventy-ninth Division, comprised of the drafted men from Baltimore, who trained at Camp Meade, into the section that resulted in the smashing of the St. Mihiel salient.
The information concerning Major Pepper also seems to indicate that Captain Harry Ingersoll, of H Company of the 313th, whose death was reported to his father, Charles E. Ingersoll, the financier, possibly met his death in the same manner
Long American Lineage
Major Pepper had a long and illustrious American lineage. His father was Dr. William Pepper, provost of the University of Pennsylvania and one of the distinguished physicians of his day. On his mother's side, Major Pepper was in direct descent from Benjamin Franklin and Commodore Perry, the hero of Lake Erie.
Major Pepper was thirty-nine years old and was born in Philadelphia. He was educated at St. Mark's, Southboro, Mass., a famous preparatory school, and afterward at the University of Pennsylvania, when he completed both the academic and the law courses. While he was in college the Spanish War began, and young Pepper immediately enlisted in Battery A, or (sic) this city, serving throughout that conflict.
He returned to his law studies and upon his graduation, entered (sic) the offices of Henry, Pepper & Bodine, and with Major Thomas Stokes, now at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, was admitted to partnership. When General Wood established the officers' training camps at Plattsburg Major Pepper took two summer courses there, and when the United States entered the war he went to Fort Niagara. He was commissioned as a major and assigned to Camp Meade, where he was given command of the Second Battalion of "Baltimore's Own," as the regiment was known.
Wife and Three Children Survive
His widow, tow sons and a daughter survive. Mrs. Pepper was Miss Rebecca Willing, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. George Willing, of Chestnut Hill, and was married some fifteen years ago. The eldest son, Benjamin Franklin Pepper, Jr., is thirteen years old, a student at St. Mark's, while the other children are Willing, eight years old and Anna, seven years old.
Two brothers of the slain soldier are in the medical corps of the army. Major H. P. Pepper is in France, while Major William Pepper, formerly assigned to the medical officers' training school at Chattanooga, is on detached service awaiting orders.
