HUGH McCAFFERY, FILEMAKER, DIES
Pioneer Captain of Industry and Founded Plant Which Bears His Name
Was Native of Ireland
Deceased Active as a Citizen and in Good Work-Survived by Three Sons
Hugh McCaffrey, since 1863 the head of a manufacturing establishment in Philadelphia, died yesterday morning at his residence, 1711 North Fourth street. He was seventy-six years old.
Mr. McCaffrey was president of the McCaffrey File Co. His long Philadelphia career, leading to his success and prominence, started in 1859, when he arrived from Ireland after a sailboat journey of six weeks, He had attended the national schools in Ireland and at fifteen was an assistant teacher.
In Philadelphia the young Irish boy was apprenticed by his elder brother, Arthur, to learn the trade of file making. He started business for himself after four years, soon taking his younger brother John into partnership. In 1889 the firm name changed from McCaffrey & Bro. To the McCaffrey File Co., Mr. McCaffrey being continuously president.
As a citizen, Mr. McCaffrey's activities included membership in the advisory committee of fourteen during Mayor Weaver's administration; member of the public service committee of one hundred during the administration of Mayor Blankenburg; membership in the Manufacturers' Club. Franklin Institute, Pennsylvania Historical Society, American-Irish Historical Society, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, committee which erected the statue of Commodore Barry in Independence Square, Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, American Hardware Manufacturers' Association and former president of Hardware Merchants' and Manufacturers' Association of Philadelphia.
Mr. McCaffrey took lifelong interest in Irish patriotic activities. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church for sixty years, and active in its affiliated Temperance Society and Literature Institute.
Three sons, Walter A., Edward V., and Joseph J., and seventeen grandchildren survive, Alice Devlin McCaffrey, his wife, died in 1914.

MRS. CLAYPOOLE NEILSON
Member of Noted Family and Mother of Six Dies at Age of Ninety
Mrs. Claypoole Neilson, of the Gladstone Apartments, died yesterday morning. She was in her ninety-first year, and member of noted family.
Her father, the late William D. Lewis, a prominent Philadelphia banker and merchant, and collector of customs for this port, also was secretary to Henry Clay on an important mission to Russia.
Her husband, Thomas Neilson, was for many years president of the Elmira and Williamsport Railroad. He died six years ago.
The surviving six children are Dr. Thomas R. Neilson, chief surgeon of Episcopal Hospital and a member of the University of Pennsylvania; Lewis Neilson, secretary of the Pennsylvania Railroad; William D. Neilson, lawyer; Frederick B. Neilson, with the Bethlehem Steel Co.; Miss Emma F. Neilson and Miss Mary A.L. Neilson, both officials of the Girls Friendly Society of America.
Mrs. Neilson's life has been given largely to her family and her charitable interests. She was one of the early promulgators of the Society of Organized Charity and took an active interest in work of the Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Neilson's life included association with many noted people. She helped entertain Thackeray when the English novelist was a guest at her father's home. Mrs. Neilson's mother was a descendant of Sir James Claypoole, financial representative of William Penn.
Services will be held at the Diocesan Church of St. Mary Wednesday afternoon. The family will meet at the residence of Mrs. Neilson's son, Dr. Thomas Neilson, 1937 Chestnut Street.
John Frigar
Superintendent of Drexel Building Dies Shortly After Operation
John Frigar, superintendent of Drexel Building, at Fifth and Chestnut streets, died yesterday at his home, King's Highway, Boothwyn, Delaware county, aged sixty-six years. Death followed an operation on his ear drums six weeks ago.
Mr. Frigar was a thirty-third degree Scottish Rite Mason. Surviving him are his widow, Martha Ann Frigar, and seven children, John Emery Frigar, assistant superintendent of the Drexel Building; Joseph H. Frigar, Ellis D. Frigar, Mrs. Robert T. Stackhouse, Mrs. John F. Grady, Mrs. A.E. Sharpless and Mrs. George M. Helms, Jr.
