Clifford Lewis Dies, Pioneer Insurance Man of Philadelphia
Member of Distinguished Family Succumbs to Long Illness, Aged 76

Clifford Lewis, member of an old and distinguished Philadelphia family, died yesterday afternoon after a two months' illness at his residence, 30 South Twenty-second street. He was seventy-six years old, and spent his lifetime in this city, where he was born June 18, 1843.

For the last thirty-eight years he has been treasurer of the Mutual Assurance Co. of Pennsylvania for Insuring Houses Against Loss by Fire. This firm, which was at one time known as the Green Tree Insurance Co., is said to be the second oldest insurance company in America, and during all its existence members of the Lewis family have been actively associated with it. Before the late Clifford Lewis, his father, David Lewis, was treasurer of that company. This office will now pass to the third generation of the family-David Lewis, of Thirteenth and Locust streets, who served in France during the world war as a major in the inspector general's department.

The late Mr. Lewis led a retired life. For the last ten years he has occupied the residence at 30 south Twenty-second street, which was once the home of his brother, Edmund Lewis, noted during his lifetime as an art collector.

During the existence of the Amphibion Society, Mr. Clifford Lewis was one of its leading members. His interest in music was keen. He was a Son of the Revolution and Colonial Wars.

Surviving him are his widow, who was Miss Ellen Cozens before her marriage, and three children. They are David Lewis, of the city, Clifford Lewis, of Utica, N. Y., and Mrs. C. Wheaton Vaughan, of New York City, to the later the late Edmund Lewis willed his art collection. Before her marriage Mr. Lewis's mother was Miss Camilla Phillips.

Private funeral services will be observed at the Twenty-second street residence Monday afternoon.
