First Presbyterian Church Graveyard, Bloomfield Ave, Caldwell, Essex County, NJ
Located at the junction of Bloomfield, Westville, and Roseland Avenues, the First Presbyterian Church
stands like a monument to times past. As one drives westward along Bloomfield Ave. from Verona into Caldwell,
one's attention is drawn immediately to the church's steeple. Partially hidden from view is the
burial ground which contains the remains of several Revolutionary War veterans. A plaque on the fence,
pictured above, states that the burial grounds were in use from approximately 1788 to approximately 1881.
The grounds are well maintained but the monuments show the affects of time and weather. Many of the
inscriptions have been lost to the gradual melting away that must inevitably take place. We photographed
most stones but were unable to ascertain exactly whose life many of them memorialized. We offer here
a list of the stones we were able to decipher followed by many we were not.
