Frederick A. Eken, an old veteran of the Civil War, died on a small farm near Salinas. Deceased was
80 years old and a native of Germany. Although in receipt of a pension, deceased lived the life
of a hermit in a hut filled with all sorts of rubbish and surrounded by thirty cats and six dogs. He
would not speak to any one unless angered, and was an inveterate toper.
