Horatio Ely died at his late residence, near Smithburg, on Friday morning, September 10th. He was born at the old dwelling-house on a part of the same farm on March 26th, 1812. He was educated at the village public school and Lennox Academy, Lennox, Mass. In 1834, he was married to Helena, daughter of Wm. L. Conover, of Manalapan. Upon his marriage he settled upon his farm at Smithburg, where he has ever since resided. He engaged in the farming business and pursued that avocation through his whole business life. He took a great interest in all that tended to develop agriculture, was one of the founders of the Monmouth Agricultural society, and was its president in 1856. in politics he was a Whig and when that party went to pieces he became a Republican. he was elected Sheriff of Monmouth County in 1837. He took an active part in the promotion of education and business enterprises beneficial to the public. He was a liberal donator and a trustee of the Peddie Institute, Hightstown; a director of Freehold Banking Company; of the Monmouth county fire insurance company, of the Freehold and Smithville turnpike company, and was one of the original promoters of the railroad from Freehold to Keyport.
