Obits - NJ - Monmouth - 1887 - John C. Nobles |
This well-known resident of Atlantic Highlands, while in D. Lane Conover's
stables on Monday morning, was stricken with apoplexy and died almost immediately.
Coroner Smith was notified but did not consider an inquest necessary. The funeral will
be held on Thursday.
Mr. Nobles was in his 60th year. He was one of the original projectors of the
Atlantic Highlands, and to his energy and push is due much of the success that
resort has obtained. He was an excellent talker, and had the ability of easily
convincing his hearers that his projects would result in financial success. Two or
three years ago his mind became affected, and he worte a letter to the New York Tribune
stating that he was going to commit suicide. he did not do so, however, and he was
placed under the care of a physician for a time. Afterward he became interested
in a patent blueing device from which he expected to make a fortune. This scheme included
the erection of a huge factoy at Atlantic Highlands. The factory was never built, although
Mr. Nobles went to a great deal of expense in advertising the goods and in making
ready for its manufacture.
