Capt. Thomas I. Swannell died at his residence near Colt's Neck at eleven o'clock on Friday night of dropsy. The funeral was held at twelve o'clock on Monday from his late residence, and at two o'clock from the Methodist church at Red Bank. the services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Labaw, of Colt's Neck, and the interment was made at Evergreen cemetery at Little Silver.

Capt. Swannell was born in England in 1827, and came to this country with his parents when he was a little boy. He had been married three times and his last wife survives him. During the late war he enlisted in the 29th regiment and was sergeant in the company commanded by Robert R. Mount. When the term of enlistment expired and the regiment was mustered out he returned home and recruited company A, of the 38th regiment, and was given a captain's commission by Governor Joel Parker. He served his country faithfully and his regiment took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chanceelorsville.

When the war closed he engaged in sash and blind manufacturing business in Brooklyn and Jersey City. He afterward returned to Red Bank and followed his trade of carpenter and builder. For several years previous to his death he had been a farmer. He was a member of Arrowsmith Post, G. A. R., and the Post attended the funeral in a body in uniform.
