James H. Peters died at his residence on Broad street last Thursday night at the age of 64 years. He had been ill five months with jaundice. the funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, and the interment was made in the cemetery at Fair View. The sermon was preached by the Rev. F. R. Harbaugh, the text being the 21st verse of the 25th Psalm. the discourse was divided into three heads, in which the clergyman spoke of the deceased's business career, his home life and his religious life. The church was crowded with friends who had come to pay the last tribute of respect to the dead man. The pall bearers were Anthony Reckless, Henry C. J. Schroeder, Asher S. Parker, Charles Cothren, Charles Parsons and John R. Bergen. James H. Peters was born in Newark. When a young man he served throughout the Mexican war as a purser on the United States man-of-war Spitfire. In 1847 he came to Red Bank and engaged in business with his father. He afterward purchased his father's interest in the business and continued it until the time of his death. Of late years the firm name has been James H. Peters & Co., his partners being his brother-in-law, William G. Hitchcock, and his son, James H. Peters, jr. A few years ago Mr. Hitchcock retired from the firm on accont of failing health. Mr. Peters married a Miss Mary Taylor, of Middletown, and two children, a son and a daughter, were born to them. The estate left by the deceased is estimated at $200,000.
