Miss Josie A. Roberts, aged sixteen years, adopted daughter of Zebulon Roberts, of Keyport, died on Wednesday, October 12th, of the very singular disease known as chronic pernicious anemia. A slow but steady consuming of the body goes on in this disease, the chemical atoms disengaging themselves from muscles, nerves and blood, while the intellect usually remains cognizant to the last of the woeful destruction going on. The steady degeneracy of the anatomy continues for years, flesh being lost, the spirits losing their animation, the appetite becoming more and more impaired, and in many cases, before death, apathy deepens into slumber, and during months, a sort of death in life provokes the wonder and concern of the family and neighborhood. Miss Roberts slowly sank through two years, and scarcely partook, even in the slightest manner, of food for several months before her death, and for seven weeks before that event, no food passed her lips - life being sustained with nutritious enemata. Throughout all these months she complained of little suffering. Source: Red Bank Register Wednesday, November 2, 1887
