Last Wednesday afternoon the family of Wm. A. Tilton, who lives near Scobeyville, left home for a short time leaving his little son, Frank A. Tilton, in charge of his eighteen year-old sister. Frank was not yet four years of age. While his sister was upstairs the little fellow began to play at smoking cigarettes, and while lighting the cigarette his clothes caught fire. He ran screaming into the hall, and his sister, seeing what had occurred, hastily brought down a quilt, which she wrapped around the burning child in the hope of smothering the flame. Before the flames could be put out however, the boy was fatally burned. He lingered in agony until the next morning when he died. Coroner Smith was summoned and he rendered a verdict of accidental death. the funeral was held Saturday and was very largely attended. Source: Red Bank Register Wednesday, November 16, 1887 Death notice in same issue lists Frank A. Tilton as aged 3 years and 9 months.
