Obits - NJ - Monmouth - Matthias Tice |
Drowned While Clamming
Last Wednesday, Matthias Tice, aged 76 years, a farmer living about two
miles southwest of Matawan, went down to the shore on a clamming excursion.
He took with him his grandson, Wilbur Tice, and the farm-hand, Joe.
About three o'clock they were wading about in water above their thighs, with
their tubs floating behind them. Mr. Tice spoke about coming in nearer to
shore and Joe thought he was making in that direction. Three or four minutes
later he looked backward where he thought Mr. Tice was and saw his tub
floating on the surface, but the man was not visible. He called to Wilbur and
they started for the tub and found Mr. Tice lying on the bottom of the bay.
They pulled him up and dragged him to the shore, and the men present rolled
him on the beach and used every available means to resuscitate him, but without
avail. It is believed that the water in which Mr. Tice was standing was so cool
as to effect the circulation and produce a chill of the muscular action of the heart.
He leaves a wife , a son, Aaron C. Tice, and a daughter, Mrs. Stephen Warne.
