At Shrewsbury, on Thursday, February 2d, Charles F. Meert, aged 49 years.

A story detailing his suicide is in the first column of the front page of this issue and starts as follows:

On Monday afternoon Charles F. Meert, of Shrewsbury, was found dead in a room in the house formerly occupied by his father-in-law, Dr. Wm. H. VanBuren. he had committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart with a pistol. He had been missing since last Thursday. For several days previous he had been despondent, and it is supposed that he was suffering from temporary insanity when he committed the fatal deed.

The article notes that the funeral, which was largely attended, was held at St. James church and the remains interred in the Catholic cemetery at Headden's corner. Also he is listed as having been in the 50th year of his life and survived by his wife and three children - a young girl about eighteen years of age, a boy about sixteen, and a younger child.
