Capt. John D. Cook, one of the oldest residents of Long Branch, died on Saturday, June 23d, of paralysis, aged 78 years. He had suffered many years with a rheumatic affection of the limbs, which confined him principally to a chair, though otherwise his general health was good. Capt. Cook was born at Long Branch and spent most of his life there. He was one of the pioneer boatmen of the Shrewsbury river and for thirty-five years of his life was engaged in carrying freights from different ports to and from New York city. After leaving the water he was for many years keeper of the Wolf Hill toll-gate.
