Henry C. J. Schroeder Dies Suddenly
He Had Been in Failing Health for Two Years, but His Death Was Unexpected
Henry Conrad Justus Schroeder, who has lived for many years at his handsome place on the west side of Broad street, died suddenly on Monday morning. His health began to fail about two years ago, but his death was unlooked for. He was born at Heidelburg, Germany, April 4th, 1813, and came to this country in 1840. He went into the importing business under the firm name of Schroeder & Switzer, and continued in this business for ten years. He was twice married, his first wife being Elizabeth Drummond, and his second wife was Sarah Hatfield, daughter of Richard Hatfield of New York. He had seven children, of whom three are living. They are Anthony Drummond Schroeder of Brooklyn; Mrs. Alfred de Cordova of New York and Countess Pieri of Rome. His second wife died about thirteen years ago, and this was followed shortly afterward by the death of his only sister, Baroness Helene von Woldeck, widow of a noted officer in the German army under the old emperor.
Mr. Shroeder's funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at half-past three o'clock at his late residence.
