New Jersey Obituaries - December 29, 1897 - Elijah Matthews
|
Elijah Matthews, one of the oldest residents of Red Bank, died early Christmas morning of heart disease, aged 81 years. Mr. Matthews settled in Red Bank in 1834, and engaged in the butcher business. He worked at this business almost all his life. Mr. Matthews was a great friend of Daniel S. Borden. Mr. Borden came to Red Bank about the same time that Mr. Matthews did, and nearly every day in recent years when the weather was pleasant, Mr. Matthews would visit Mr. Borden's shop and the two men would talk over old times in Red Bank, and relate incidents of life in Red Bank sixty years ago. Mr. Matthews leaves four children, Ida and Ella Matthews and Mrs. John Stiles of Red Bank, and Mrs. Isaac Patterson of New York. The funeral was held on Monday at two o'clock from the house. The service was conducted by Rev. E. C. Hancock. The pall-bearers were Jarvis Holmes, William J. Sickles, Frederick Supp and Daniel S. Borden. The body was buried at Little Silver.
