New Jersey Obituaries - July 28, 1897 - Benjamin Coles

Benjamin Coles of Wharf avenue died of a complication of diseases last Wednesday night. He was 63 years old. Mr. Coles had been in poor health for a long time. He was born in England and came to America when only four years old. He was married twice. His first wife died in 1888, leaving six children, all of whom live at Long Branch. Mr. Coles's second wife was Miss Deborah Layton, who survives him. He lived at Long Branch until about six years ago, when he came to Red Bank and opened a restaurant on Wharf avenue, which he conducted until his death. His funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from St. Luke's Methodist church at Long Branch. The burial was in the West Long Branch cemetery.
