Killed On The Railroad
Struck by an Express Train While Walking on the Track
D. Nelson Duryea, who lived near Howell, was killed by an express train at Howell last Wednesday morning. The engineer saw him walking on the track and blew the whistle, but Mr. Duryea was deaf and did not hear it. He was reading a letter and did not see the approaching train. He was thrown only a few feet and was found dead alongside the track. His body was badly mangled but his face was not disfigured.
Mr. Duryea came from Brooklyn last spring for the benefit of his health. He rented a small house near Howell, where he lived alone. He was on his way home from the store, where he had been to buy groceries, when he was killed. He was about fifty years old. The body was taken to Freehold, where it was viewed by Coroner Charles F. Herbert. It was afterward taken to Brooklyn.
Per the Death Notice Mr. Duryea was aged about 50 years.
