New Jersey Obituaries - November 24, 1897 - Rev. William Henry Shermer
|
A Clergyman Died
His Grandson Probably Fatally Injured the Same Day
Rev. William Henry Shermer died at Providence, R. I., on Saturday, where he had gone for treatment for Bright's disease of the kidneys. He was the pastor of the Central Baptist church of Atlantic Highlands, and had been pastor of that church since last May. He left a widow and one grandchild, but no children. He was 51 years old.
Mr. Shermer was pastor of the Third Baptist church of Philadelphia for thirteen years; of the First Baptist church of Elizabeth seven years, and of the East Baptist church of Elizabeth three years. He left this last church to come to Atlantic Highlands.
The funeral was held at Atlantic Highlands yesterday. The service was in charge of Rev. W. H. Hillier of Atlantic Highlands, and about a dozen other clergymen of Monmouth county took part in the services. Twenty members from his last previous church were also present at the funeral. The body was taken to Philadelphia for burial, and another service was held there this morning.
When Mr. Shermer went to Providence he took his grandson, Shermer Collins, with him. The day that Mr. Shermer died his grandson fell out of the window of the sick room, and his skull was fractured. The boy's recovery is very doubtful.
