Killed By A Bull
Thomas Burk Gored and Butted to Death - The Bull Shot
Thomas Burk, a cowtender living near Marlboro, was gored so badly by a bull owned by C. H. Hendrickson last Thursday that he died of his injuries the next day. For the past quarter of a century Mr. Burk had tended cows along the turnpike. Last Thursday the cows were feeding along the road near C. H. Hendrickson's place and Mr. Burk was sitting on the fence watching his herd. Without a bit of warning the bull broke through the fence and attacked the old man, who was almost powerless to help himself. The only thing that saved Mr. Burk from instant death was the fact that the bull had short horns. Four of Mr. Burk's ribs were broken, his face bones were crushed, and he was otherwise injured. Several men who were at work in a nearby field heard Mr. Burk's cries for help and they drove the beast away. One of the men said that the maddened brute was on its knees butting Mr. Burk in the face when they arrived. Mr. Burk was taken home and, though medical assistance was at one summoned, he died next day. The bull that attacked Mr. Burk attacked Henry Longstreet. Mr. Longstreet had been out dove shooting and had a loaded gun. He put five loads of shot in the body of the bull, killing it. Mr. Burk's funeral was held on Monday.
