Drowned In The River

Patrick H. Spillane's Body Found by a Crabber

Patrick Hart Spillane, father of John Spillane of Wall street, was drowned in the river back of the Baptist church property on Monday morning. He was 87 years old and was getting childish. He was under treatment by Dr. Marsden and would often go to his house. On Sunday night he rose about half-past one o'clock and wanted to go down town, but he was prevailed on to go back to bed. About nine o'clock on Monday morning he went to Dr. Marsden's. He was seen wading out in the river by some crabbers, and he would occasionally duck his head under the water. Shortly after noon Ferd. White, who had been crabbing, was pushing his boat to a stake when his net struck something soft. He pulled the object to the surface and saw that it was Mr. Spillane's body. The body was taken ashore and was conveyed to R. T. Smith's undertaker shop on Front street, where it was prepared for burial.

Mr. Spillane was born at Clonakilty, Ireland, in the same village where Richard Croker, the head of Tammany hall in New York city, was born. The houses where the two men were born are almost side by side. Mr. Spillane came to this country fifty years ago, and up to three years ago he lived in Massachusetts, where he was foreman of a shoe factory. Three years ago he was attacked with erysipelas in his foot and had to give up work. He was the father of three children, only one of whom was living . This was John Spillane of Red Bank and the old man came to this place to end his days. The disease in his foot kept him confined to the house most of the time.

The funeral was held this morning at St. James's church and was largely attended.
