New Jersey Obituaries - May 4, 1898 - George W. Brown

George W. Brown of Long Branch died of Bright's disease and paresis last Thursday. He had been sick for several weeks and was unconscious for four days before his death. Mr. Brown was 65 years old. He was the son of Elizabeth and George Brown and was born at Long Branch January 31st, 1833. In 1855 he married Miss Mary Pauline Price and she, with three children, survives him. In 1874 he was elected sheriff of Monmouth county for a one year term and the following year he was elected for a three-year term. Mr. Brown was mayor of Long Branch for twelve years. He was one of the organizers of the Long Branch banking company and for several years was president of the Monmouth county agricultural society. At the time of his death he was president of the Long Branch board of education and a member of the township committee of Ocean township. His funeral was held on Monday from his late home and the body was buried in Glenwood cemetery at Long Branch. The pall-bearers were Edward Hughes, Benjamin A. VanBrunt, C. Henry Irwin, Dr. J. J. Reed and Albert Cubberly.
