New Jersey Obituaries - November 16, 1898 - Mrs. Sarah (White) Smith Gardiner

Mrs. Sarah (White) Smith Gardiner died last Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lambert Jackson of Long Branch City. She was 82 years old. She had been sick for some time and on Monday she was stricken with paralysis. This caused her death. Mrs. Gardiner was the daughter of Elizabeth and Jesse White and was born at Rahway. She was married twice. Her first husband was James Smith, who was drowned on November 11th, 1850. Her second husband was Solomon Gardiner, who died in December, 1874. Mrs. Gardiner had seven children by her first husband. Five are still living. They are Matthew Smith of Newark, David Smith of West Long Branch, Mrs. Lambert Jackson of Long Branch City, Rachel Smith and Georgianna Smith. Mrs. Rebecca Casher is the surviving child by the second marriage. Mrs. Gardiner also leaves four sisters. They are Mrs. Rachel Arrants, Mrs. Maggie West and Mrs. Nehemiah Taylor of Long Branch, and Mrs. Hannah VanNote of Asbury Park. The funeral was held on Monday and the body was buried at West Long Branch.
