A Suicide At Hazlet
A Toll-Gate Keeper Cuts the Arteries in His Wrist
A. D. Whitlock, who has been employed as toll-gate keeper at the gate nearest Middletown on the Middletown and Keyport turnpike, committed suicide at Hazlet last Sunday night. Mr. Whitlock left the toll house on Sunday afternoon and went to the hotel at Hazlet, where he staid all night.
He was found in bed on Monday morning with six gashes cut in his wrist, which he had made with a pocket knife. Mr. Whitlock was removed to the toll house, where he lived, and Dr. Ned Taylor was summoned. He sewed up the wounds, but Mr. Whitlock died from loss of blood and exhaustion shortly afterward. Coroner Anderson of Keyport was summoned, but he deemed an inquest unnecessary.
Mr. Whitlock was about sixty years old. He was a well-read man, and was of far more than ordinary culture, but was addicted to liquor.
