Clarence Soden Drowned
He Was Playing on a Mill Dam and Fell Into the Water
Clarence Soden, aged about ten years, son of Gilbert Soden, Jr., of Taylor's Mills, near Englishtown, was drowned in the mill pond at that place on Tuesday of last week. He and several companions were playing about the dam, throwing sticks into the water. Young Soden tried to throw a stick a long ways into the water when he lost his balance and fell into the pond. The water at the dam is about fifteen feet deep. His companions were all about his age and were too frightened to try to save him. Thomas A. Ward of Freehold was the only person at the mill at that time. The boys notified him and he went to the scene of the accident. Young Soden had gone down for the last time when Ward reached the dam. Gilbert Soden, the boy's father, was working on a nearby farm. He got the dead body of his son out of the pond with an ice hook and carried it home.
