New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - John M. Smith
|
John M. Smith of Maple avenue died on Christmas morning of paralysis, aged 75 years. He had been sick about a year and a half. The funeral will be held to-night at eight o'clock at the house. Rev. J. K. Manning of Trenton will conduct the service. The body will be buried at Fair View cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Middletown township. In the early forties he formed a partnership with Forman Borden and they conducted a general store at Red Bank under the firm name of Borden & Smith. Their store was located on Front street, at the foot of Broad street. In 1849 Mr. Smith sold out to his partner and went to California in search of gold. Two years later he returned and started a clothing business at New York. This he conducted until 1858, when he and Robert T. Smith, who is now in the undertaking business at Red Bank, formed a partnership in the grocery business at Brooklyn. After two years Robert Smith retired from the firm on account of failing health. John M. Smith conducted the business alone a number of years and then moved to Patchogue, Long Island, to engage in the general store business. He remained there until 1882, when he returned to Red Bank and opened a grocery store in Trafford Allen's building on Front street. This he conducted until three years ago, when he sold out to L. VanGilluwe. The business is now conducted by Japhia Clayton.
Mr. Smith was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary Jones. Her father, Aaron R. Jones, owned most of the Rumson road property at one time and lived in that section at the time of his daughter's marriage to Mr. Smith. Two children were the result of this union, both of whom are living. They are Edgar Smith of New York and Miss Helena Smith, who lives at home. Mrs. Smith died about thirty years ago. Mr. Smith's second wife was Miss Laura Doughty, daughter of Benjamin Doughty of Fair Haven. She and two children, Lillie and Gertrude, survive him. He leaves also two sisters, Mrs. George T. Smith of Wallace street, Red Bank, and Mrs. Joseph Mount of Middletown township.
Mr. Smith was one of the charter members of the Red Bank Baptist church. Only two other charter members of this church are now living. They are Mrs. Sidney T. Smith of Red Bank and Mrs. Sidney McClane of Middletown township.
