New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - David L. Clayton
|
David L. Clayton of Freehold died of diphtheria on Saturday, October 21st aged 68 years. He was sick only three days. The funeral was held on Sunday. Owing to the contagious nature of the disease the funeral was private, it being attended only by the members of the family and the minister and deacons of the Freehold Baptist church.
Mr. Clayton was the son of the late Jonathan P. Clayton and was born at Lokerson's corner, in Freehold township. He followed farming in early life and afterward engaged in the wheelwright business near his old home. Twenty years ago he moved to Freehold and combined the undertaking business with the wheelwright business. Later he sold out the wheelwright business, but he conducted the undertaking business up to the time of his death. He married Miss Caroline Strickland, who lived near his old home. She and one son, David Henry Clayton, survive him.
