Dr. Joseph E. Arrowsmith of Keyport, brother of Prof. S. C. Arrowsmith of Red Bank, died early this morning, aged 77 years. Death was due to a general breaking down. He had been ailing for the past two years but was able to attend to his practice until about six weeks ago. At that time he took to his bed and failed rapidly.
Dr. Arrowsmith was born at Arrowsmith’s mills, between Middletown and Keyport, and was the son of Thomas Arrowsmith. In 1838 he began studying medicine under Dr. Edward Taylor of Middletown and a year later he entered the University of New York. He graduated in 1843 and began practice at Keyport, where he had lived ever since.
Dr. Arrowsmith was twice married. His first wife was Miss Maria Craig, daughter of Archibald Craig of Freehold. She died in 1818. His second wife was Katherine W. Teer of New York, who died about six years ago. Two children survive him by his first wife. They are Mrs. Lorenzo G. Woodhouse of New York, who is now traveling in Europe, and Miss Annie C. Arrowsmith, who lives at home. He leaves no children by his second wife.
