Killed By a Train

Alfonzo Delmonte, aged seven years, son of Cosimo Delmonte of Long Branch, was struck by a train at that place last Friday night and ground to death under the wheels. The train that killed him was in charge of conductor George Allen. The train had ended its run at Branchport and was backing down to the East Long Branch station. As the train approached Liberty street crossing at Long Branch the flagman saw young Delmonte hastening toward the track. The flagman warned the boy not to cross the track but the warning was unheeded. The rear car of the train struck him and threw him under the wheels. The entire train passed over him and his body was ground to pieces. What was left of the body had to be gathered up with a shovel.
