|
James Holmes Hendrickson, one of the most widely known citizens of Monmouth county, died last Thursday of paralysis, aged 72 years. He was first stricken with paralysis a year and a half ago. The funeral was held on Monday at two o’clock at his late home on Front street. Rev. Robert MacKellar conducted the service and the body was buried in Fair View cemetery.
Mr. Hendrickson was the son of Margaret and Tobias Hendrickson and was born at the old Willow Tree tavern at Clarksburg, in Millstone township. When he was a boy his parents moved to Keyport and 61 years ago they came to Red Bank. In 1849 J. Holmes Hendreckson and his brother, Samuel T., bought the Globe hotel from Robert Hart. This they conducted until the death of Samuel eight years ago. The brothers also established a sale and exchange stable on Mechanic street, which remained in J. Holmes Hendrickson’s possession after the death of his brother and until a few weeks ago. Mr. Hendrickson was also interested in various other financial and business enterprises.
Mr. Hendrickson was married in 1853 to Mary E. Borden, daughter of the late Charles E. Borden of Red Bank. She survives him. He also leaves three children, Mrs. Thomas S. Hubbard, Mrs. Harry Edwards and Mrs. Harry Payne, all of Red Bank. Out of a family of nine children only two survive Mr. Hendrickson. They are Mrs. Alchey E. Conover and Miss M. C. Hendrickson both of Red Bank.
