New Jersey Obituaries - 1900 - Charles Hurley, Jr.
|
Charles Hurley, Jr., son of Emma and Charles Hurley, Sr, of Shrewsbury, died on Friday of spinal meningitis, aged six years. The boy had been sick about a month. It was at first thought that he was improving but on the Saturday before his death a change for the worse took place and Dr. James E. Cooper, the family physician, held a consultation with Dr. Walter S. Whitmore. Dr. Cooper said that he had done all he could for the little boy and Dr. Young of Red Bank was called in. The child was beyond medical aid, however, and gradually sank until he died.
Charles was the only boy in a family of ten children. Among his schoolmates and friends he was known as “June”, the name being given to him as an abbreviation of Charles Hurley, Jr. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Presbyterian Sunday-school and of the Shrewsbury public school. He was a bright child and was a great favorite with his teacher and schoolmates. A floral piece was given to him by his schoolmates and a floral piece was also given by the young people’s mission band connected with the Shrewsbury Presbyterian church. The graduating class of the Red Bank public school, of which Lily Hurley, the dead boy’s sister, is a member, also sent a floral tribute. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon. The sermon was preached by Rev. Samuel D. Price and the body was buried in the West Long Branch cemetery. The pall bearers were Harold Brower, Ralph Fields, Joseph Healier and William Borden.
