|
Mrs. Hannah Bedell, widow of Sylvanus C. Bedell, died on Thursday morning at her home on Railroad avenue of capillary bronchitis. She was 88 years
old. She began to fail in health about two years ago but her condition did not take a serious turn until a week before her death. The funeral was
held on Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Methodist church. Rev. E. C. Bancock preached the sermon. The pall bearers were John S.
Hubbard, James H. Minton, William P. Corlies and Josseph Millward. The body was buried in Fair View cemetery.
Mrs. Bedell was the daughter of Mary and William Taylor and was born at New York. Her mother was a native of Middletown township, having lived at
Nut Swamp a good many years. Mrs. Bedell was married at the age of nineteen, her husband being extensively engaged at that time in the shoe business
at New York. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Bedell moved to Red Bank into the house in which Mrs. Bedell died. Mrs. Bedell's mother owned the house and an
addition was built to it at the time Mrs. Bedell and her husband went there to live. The transportation facilities in those days were not what they
are now and the lumber for the addition to the house was brought from New York to Red Bank by raft. During the past few years Mrs. Bedell had spent most of her time with her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Garrison of New Medford. The summer months she spent at Red Bank. Despite her advanced years she was very active until her health began to fail about two years ago.
Mrs. Bedell joined the Methodist church when a young girl. She always took an active interest in church work and she possessed virtues that won and kept for her many warm friendships. Mrs. Bedell was the mother of ten children, only two of whom survive her. The two who survive her are Sylvanus Bedell of Red Bank and Mrs. Garrison of New Medford. She leaves also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
