George D. Smith of Navesink died last Wednesday of a general giving out of his vital powers, incident to old age. He passed his 83rd birthday on August 14th last and the event was celebrated at his home. Mr. Smith's funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at the house. Rev. J. S. Russell of Atlantic Highlands conducted the service, owing to the absence of Rev. J. W. Nickelson, pastor of the Navesink Methodist church, of which Mr. Smith was a member. The pall bearers were William Bennett, Joseph and William Lewis, Webster Swan, Henry Johnson and John Vanderveer. The body was buried in Fair View cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born at New York. When a young man he married there and soon after his marriage he moved to Navesink, locating on the place where he lived at the time of his death. When he first went to Navesink he engaged in painting but he afterward gave that up to engage in farming. About two years ago his health began to fail and he had been gradually declining in health since that time. Five children survive him. They are Albert and Mortimer Smith and Mrs. John I. Sickles of Navesink, Mrs. E. E. Burdge of Locust Point, and Mrs. Charles Carhart of Atlantic Highlands. Mr. Smith's wife has been dead a number of years.
