Shot the Wrong Man

John Sorrensen, who was employed in the ordnance (sic) department at Sandy Hook, was shot and instantly killed last week by a sentry. A soldier at Sandy Hook had been put in the guard house on a charge of having robbed a companion. He escaped from the guard house the morning that he was to have been tried and the guards were doubled to prevent his getting off Sandy Hook. Sorrensen was seen by one of the guards and was mistaken for the fugitive soldier. He was commanded to halt but he either did not hear the command or else paid no attention to it, for he kept on his way. A shot was fired as a warning but he still kept on. The guard then shot to kill and the bullet entered Sorrensen's heart. He was dead when the guard reached him.
