A Baby Burned To Death

It Fell in the Fire While Its Mother Was Gathering Wood

The year old son of John Goode, who lives on the James VanBrackle farm in Holmdel township, fell into a fire in an open grate on Tuesday of last week and was burned so badly that he died the following day. Mrs. Goode went to the woods to gather firewood. She left her two children, aged one and three years respectively, alone in the house. She was gone about an hour. When she returned she found the youngest child lying on the floor with his feet in the fire. One of the child's shoes was burned off and both legs were burned to the thigh. Medical aid was summoned at once, but the child died the next day from its injuries. The elder child could give no intelligent explanation as to how the accident happened. There was a chair near the fire place and it is thought that the child in trying to climb on the chair slipped feet first into the fire.
