|
Jonathan Tunis Pinckney of Atlantic Highlands died very suddenly on Monday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jacob
T. Stout, with whom he made his home. He had been sick for some time with Bright's disease and he was troubled
with fatty degeneration of the heart. For a week or so before his death he had kept more to the house than usual,
but he had not been confined to the bed. On Monday morning he ate a hearty breakfast as usual, and after breakfast
took his accustomed smoke. He then went to his room and a few minutes later his sister, Mrs. Trout, found him in
his easy chair breathing heavily. He died befor(sic) medical aid could be summoned.
Mr, Pinckney was born in New York and was 68 years old. When he was seventeen years old he went to Middletown to
live with his uncle, Jonathan Tunis, after whom he was named. When Jacob T. Stout married Mr. Pinckney's sister
Mr. Pinckney went to live with them. His reason became impaired through sickness and he was taken to the asylum
at Trenton. He soon recovered but he remained at the asylum as keeper for a number of years. He was a marshal
at Atlantic Highlands for a number of years and was a very familiar figure on the streets.
The funeral was held this afternoon at one o'clock at the Atlantic Highlands Methodist church, of which Mr. Pinckney
was a member. Rev. Samuel Sargent had charge of the service. The body was buried at Fair View cemetery.
