James MacGregor, a former resident of Fair Haven, died at New York on Saturday, October 5th, aged 74 years. He was born at Eatontown. Early in life he moved to New York. At the age of eighteen he became a member of the New York fire department. He was instrumental in securing the passage of an act creating the department of buildings in New York and also the acts requiring fire escapes on tenements and iron stairways in similar structures. He was at one time superintendent of building and for fifty years he had been a member of the 27th regiment of New York.

In 1873 Mr. MacGregor bought the Bennett and Little properties along the river front at Fair Haven and built a fine residence for his own occupancy. Four years ago he rented the house to Benjamin Steinhardt and while occupied by Mr. Steinhardt it burned down. The handsome residence of J. H. McAnerney now occupies a part of the tract. Of late years Mr. MacGregor had lived at New York. A wife, three sons and a daughter survive him.
