New York Obituaries - 1864 - Mrs. Eliza W. (Burnans) Farnham


   

Mrs. Eliza W. Farnham, well-known throughout the nation as a philanthropist, and an author, died on Thursday morning, at the residence of Mr. B. F. Voohies, in this city. Mrs. Farnham was in the 49th year of her age, having been born at Rensselaerville, Albany County, New York, in November of 1815. Her maiden name was Burnans, and she was married in Illinois to Mr. T.J. Farnham, a traveler and writer, in 1836. Mrs. Farnham took a deep interest in every variety of philanthrophy, particularly in prison reform, and for a long time she was matron of Sing Sing Prison. She was also the author of a number of books devoted to the amelioration of the condition of the female sex, and a vindication of their rights.. Her writings were vigorous and forcible.
