Obituaries - NY - 1901 - James C. Matthews

James C. Matthews, who has been well known for many years among hotel men in this city, died
yesterday at the Murray Hill Hotel, where he was employed as a room clerk. He was born in Peru
in 1847, but came to New York with his parents when a boy. He was educated in the public schools,
and in 1883 went into the hotel business, receiving a position as cashier at the Murray Hill Hotel.
In 1884 he went to the St. James Hotel, and in 1886 he married the daughter of A. P. Sturtevant,
and leased from his father-in-law the Sturtevant House. He next went to New London, where he
became manager of the Fort Griswold House, and later of the Edgemore Hotel. He was President
for one year of the Hotel Men's Benevolent Association. He leaves a widow.
