Obituaries - NY - 1914 - Thomas Whittaker
|
Whittaker, Thomas, died after a long illness, on Christmas
Day, December 25, 1914, at his home, No. 50 West 47th Street, New
York City. He was born in Ireland, coming to this country at
about the age of sixteen and associating himself with Dr. Muhlenburg,
a well known educator and the founder of St. Luke's Hospital.
Mr. Whittaker was in the Church Book Publishing business for
more than fifty years; first with the Evangelical Knowledge Society
and since 1874 for himself. His extablishment in the Bible
House at the corner of Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue was always
a centre of Episcopal Church activities. He was the publisher
of Whittaker's Churchman's Almanac, The Parish Visitor and
many Theological Works of Clergymen prominent in the American
and English Episcopal Churches. He was a member of the Board
of the American Bible Society and Treasurer of the Church Congress.
He was secretary of the Chelter for Respectable Girls, a
member of the Evangelical Knowledge Society, the Church Club of
New York, the New York Historical Society, the American Numismatical
and Archaeological Society.
The funeral services were held at St. Bartholomew;s Church,
44th Street and Madison Avenue, on Monday morning, December
28th, at ten o'clock. He is survived by his wife, Ella H. Whittaker,
and by a son, Thomas Shirley Whittaker.
