DeF. Hicks Dies Suddenly
President of St. Nicholas Society Collapses in Penn Station
De Forest Hicks of 155 East Seventy-second Street died suddenly in the waiting
room of Pennsylvania Station yesterday afternoon. He was well-known
in business and club circles, and was a member of the banking and brokerage
firm of Coggeshall & Hicks, 123 Broadway and 203 West Seventy-second Street.
Mr. Hicks was convalescing from an attack of pneumonia and was
on his way to Atlantic City with his wife and a nurse. While waiting for his
train his heart, weakened by weeks of illness, he collapsed, and he died some
time after the arrival of a physician.
With M. H. Coggeshall, Mr. Hicks formed the firm of Coggeshall & Hicks
fourteen year ago. He was born in Summit, NJ on Oct 30, 1875, and was
a son of William Cleveland Hicks and Emily Norwood De Forest Hicks.
He was graduated from Trinity College in 1896
Mr. Hicks was President of the St. Nicholas Society and a member of
the Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht Club, the Church Club, the Balustrol Golf Club,
the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Psi Upsilon Fraternity. Among his
business connections was the Penninsular Telephone Company, of which he was
Treasurer. His summer home was at Oyster Bay.
In 1909 Mr. Hicks married Miss Nancy Benedict of Athens, Ga., who survives
him. he also left a brother, the Rev. William Cleveland Hicks of Washington, D.C.
