Edward W. Bailey, Grain Operator
Special to the New York Times
Chicago, jan 2 - Edward W. Bailey, a member of the Board of Trade since
July, 1870, died suddenly today, aged 77 years. Mr. Bailey was known in all
leading grain markets of the country, making his start in Vermont and
coming West in 1871.
His operations were large and highly successful. In 1893, during the panic, he
was forced to suspend through the failure of John Cudahy. Fourteen years
afterward, in 1907, he paid out over $ ?25,000, with interest at 6 per cent to
all creditors although not obliged to pay a cent. He regarded it as a moral obligation.
